Wonder of Acupuncture

The main layer project is based on the pressure/ stress points in the human body commonly used for acupuncture. The box it sits in is based on the diagrams on Chinese acupuncture charts, that way even though the two parts look nothing alike, they are still related. The sleeve combines the two ideas. It has the lines found in the first part of the project combined with the triangular shapes cut out of the box.

Tile Board

This project started out as Van Gogh's Portrait of Dr. Gachet. I broke the painting down into its basic colors and calculated the percentages of those colors on the painting using basic geometric shapes and calculations. After that was done, I wanted to make something from that that was fun and interactive (something that many of Van Gogh's works seem to lack, being drab and depressing for the most part). This peg board with colored tiles seemed to be the best way to take the essence of Van Gogh's masterpiece and transform it into something fun. After I constructed and painted everything, I asked my classmates to help me out by making their own designs on the board, and this was the result! I don't think I could have asked for a better result.

Thank you to everybody who contributed to my project by creating their very own design!

First Project

After selecting shapes from four of our collages, we were asked to create an object that could lay within a 10x16x16 matrix. The collage shapes were our "floor plans," and we were told to explore the connections that lay between our shapes. This is my result.

A Life Cycle

In this project, we were given the restriction of working with "layers". My interpretation of this parameter lies within the multiple (and in this case, 205) frames of the time lapse video. I took inspiration for this from the charcoal drawings and animations of William Kentridge, and through this exploration, I have gained a significantly increased respect for the complexity and difficulty of his work.

The video is a stylized version of the life and death of a tree, with the ground and sky both eventually becoming completely clouded in black, to represent the pollution killing off the environment.

Collages

These collages were formed from multiple hand-drawn widgets that were scanned and photoshopped. Our results were limited by our creativity.

Layers Project

Layers project as of now.

Landscape at Twilight

Using Van Gogh's Landscape at Twilight, I created a system to estimate the percentage of the six most prevalent colors in the painting.  I created a 1/8" grid system over the painting and counted the percentage of colors in each horizontal row across the painting.  The two graphs demonstrate this process.  The first set of circle graphs corresponds to each row, starting in the top left corner with the first row, and ending with the last circle in the bottom right corresponding with the lowest row in the painting.  This graph was hand-printed using a silkscreen.  The second graph is a bar graph with a similar pattern,  with the left most set of bars relating to the first row in the painting.  Joel Beeby

Color Study Project - Final Painting

Final color study project. Painting with acrylic on a 3' x 4' canvas. I based my color study project off of Van Gogh's Cafe at Night.

An upclose shot of the colors and shapes on the canvas.

Construction Lines that Compliment to Create Planes

After I drew the widgets, scanned them, painted them with watercolor, and scanned them again, I now had several images that could be collaged in photoshop.  I used the verb, "to compliment," to arrange the widgets in this composition.  The construction lines of the drawing and the geometry of the diffeerent widgets each compliment each other.  The colors, being complimentary, also compliment each other.

Widget Drawings

Here are some of the drawings I created of the widgets.  I left several construction lines.  I also decided to go in and add watercolor to the drawings and scanned them.  I chose blue and orange because they're complimentary.
