Transparent Knowledge

In an exploration of "Soft Space" during the first semester, I envisioned a space that would not only allow people to connect with people, but also with everything that they need to in the world. There is a screen that you can interact with, simultaneously accessing every aspect of your life while allowing people to interact with you as each paned is made from a transparent material. The screens could also be linked together in a fashion to display a movie across multiple screens or they could all be linked together for a light show or for special announcements and/ or advertising. I this way, every person could interact with the structure as they needed to and could have a personal experience or share it with others. In the model for this structure, i tried to recreate what the experience would look like if there were to be an exhibition about famous buildings in architecture. The plexiglass pylons display their images and also behave differently in different lights.

Roof in Flight

The wings of a bird are both elegant and powerful. The simple motion of the wings moving up and down creates lift, engaging the ground and sky with each stroke. With rotating the boards in increments, you create a perfectly balanced structure that is both beautiful and strong. I only used 8 of the available 4x6's in an attempt to create the most powerful manifestation of my idea with the lest amount of materials. There is also an option to cover the structure with canvas, creating a pristine white covering that could be adorned with screen printed images or could be cut to create interesting shadows or to frame certain instances in the sky. A simple elegance approach was taken when when i started to think about this project and i feel this was a suitable "roof" for the pillars in Burchard Plaza.

Library at Eberswalde

Here is a close up of the two concrete slabs that we have poured thus far. They are to scale representations of the actual slabs used in the construction. More to come!

Library at Eberswalde

For our Art of Building group, the five of us decided to study the Library at Eberswalde, Germany by Herzog & De Meuron. Our class was focusing on signage and we were all interested in screen printing, so we decided to study this building. The process includes screen printing a retarder onto the plexiglass with the desired image and then mixing the concrete and pouring it into the mold. Wait 48 hours and then voila! You have a concrete slab with your screen printed image. Our building's model is a combination of plexiglass for the windows and matte-board for the concrete surfaces which have been xyloled with the images from the original building.

Final Drawings for the Salt Maker

These drawings were created to examine various conditions for the model and overall design. The sun study influenced the roof overhangs and the site map influenced where the house sat within the landscape and also the size limitations and shape of the residence. These drawings showcase the thought process and final design. More pictures to follow.

Final Model for the Salt Maker

The model is finally done. I tried to model the house as accurately as i could, thinking about the little details and how the home will actually be constructed. While building this model, it helped me understand me reasonings for each piece and helped inform me on my final drawings as well. The model is made from a cardboard base and the home has a solid rockite foundation with vertical wood siding and Plexiglas for the windows. Salt Maker On The Edge

The design is simple. Have a minimal amount of space to support a salt maker and his dog. The plan was to create the feeling of two solid masses that would suspend a light and airy bridge that would allow for magnificent views of the cliffs and surrounding preserve. The house will incorporate two solid, concrete ends that will suspend a very light wood and glass section which will allow for the amazing views. While the house is only around 400 square feet, this will supply all the space one needs to live comfortably with his dog. The man is in love with nature, so the house is either made with materials that are from the surrounding area or are formed by those same materials. In the middle section of the home, there is a lack of materials to allow the salt maker to feel more in touch with the nature he loves so much while still being inside.An adjacent building will be his work area and also allow for the salt storage.
